Teocalli 1995-2008

Director Julio Bustos

About the group

Teocalli was founded on January 20, 1995 and its main mission has always been the promotion and preservation of the Mexican culture through its music and dance. The former director and former students of Anahuac de Fresno City College who wanted to continue to nurture their passion for Mexican dance in a more professional setting started Teocalli.

·        Selected to participate in the  prestigious San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival three times. (1996, 1998, 2002). The only ethnic group from the valley to have been selected ever.

·        In 1996, Teocalli toured  the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco and Mexico city.

·        Host and sister organization to several traveling groups in Mexico and the U. S.  traveling in the U.S.

·        Five time host to the largest folklórico festival in Mexico and the U. S. : Danzantes Unidos Festival.

·        Winner of a multitude of prizes and recognition throughout other festivals and competitions, in and outside of the state.

“What’s in store for Teocalli?”

·        In 2008 we officially became the first truly professional folklórico group in the valley.  Our members get stipends for every paid performance.

·        We love to travel!! To that end, we have purchased a group bus. After painting it with the official Teocalli colors we expect to have our maiden trip when we audition for the 2009 Ethnic Dance Festival in San Francisco in January.

·        In April we will continue our tradition of joining the best of the best at the annual Danzantes Unidos Festival in San Jose.

·        Our second trip will be to Rosarito, Baja California.  We have been invited to be the official U. S. guest group for the famous “Calabaceado Festival” in La Misión, Baja California.

·        After more than 10 years, we’re currently planning our “México Tour II”, through the states of   México City, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana roo. This trip will take place during the last three weeks of the month of July.   We will be spending the majority of 2008-2009. Polishing our repertoire and fundraising for our big trip.  Don’t be left behind!

And the Director

I was born in Mexico City but at the age of fourteen, my family moved to Fresno.  I finished my education at Sequoia Freshman and Roosevelt H. S.  I know what it’s like to learn a second language as a freshman!
In 1992, I graduated from Fresno State with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a minor in Chicano-Latino Studies.  I just completed my 16th year teaching Spanish for Clovis Unified, and my 25th year as a folklóric instructor.
I am married to a lovely Sonoran (Mex.) by the name of Rosa Imelda.  I have three children:  Tony a seventh grader, Oscar, an eight grader and  César, an eleventh grader.

My biggest accomplishment:  Being selected by the lord to be the father of this wonderful family.
